Iodine

Iodine

Kelp is a large, leafy seaweed belonging to the brown algae family that grows in "forests" in the colder waters of the world’s oceans.  Kelp has been used for centuries as an important nutritious staple ingredient in Asian cuisines. Dulse is a red alga that growth on the Northern coast of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is a well-known snack food and an important source of dietary fiber.  Both kelp and dulse are excellent sources of iodine, which has been shown to be essential for healthy thyroid function

Iodine is an essential trace element and a constituent of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The thyroid gland actively absorbs iodide from the blood to make and release the T3 and T4 hormones into the blood. Significant iodine deficiency causes goiter and decreased thyroid function. Epidemiologic studies showed that excessive administration of iodine can contribute to the development of autoimmune thyroid disease in genetically prone individuals. Administration of iodine supplementation is appropriate in individuals with persistently low blood levels of iodine and decreased thyroid function. The optimal daily dose of iodine supplementation should be adjusted based on the level of iodine in your blood.
