Strontium is a common earth element which is easily incorporated in the bones and stimulates new bone formation and delays bone resorption. Therefore, it is a near ideal natural remedy to improve low bone density.
In a number of clinical studies, strontium was shown to reduce frequency of vertebral, hip and peripheral bone fractures.
Potential side effects:
- Gastrointestinal upset
- Transient joint pain
- Slightly increased risk of venous blood clots
Potential drug interactions:
- Quinolone antibiotics – ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin
- Tetracycline antibiotics – tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline
- Bisphosphonates – Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva
- Decreased kidney function
- History of blood clots in the veins (venous thromboembolism, e.g., deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism).
- Blood disorders that increase the risk of blood clots in the veins (e.g., antiphospholipid syndrome, factor V Leiden mutation)
- Young age (less than 25 years)

The daily dose of strontium citrate should not exceed 700 mg a day. Strontium citrate should be taken on an empty stomach with a glass of water at least 30 minutes before a meal. Strontium and calcium as well as strontium and magnesium should not be taken together. Take them at least 2 hours apart from each other.
