Natural Remedies for Upper Respiratory Infections

Natural Remedies for Upper Respiratory Infections

Natural remedies for upper respiratory infections are designed to help alleviate the symptoms from upper respiratory infections like sinus infections, allergies, and bronchitis by increasing our mucosal immune response.

What is our mucosal response?
The mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tract is the main barrier between the external environment and our inner body compartments. The mucosal lining acts as a barrier protecting our body from parasites, viruses, and bacterial pathogens that can enter our body through our nose, mouth, and eyes. These pathogens make us prone to frequent sinus infections, bronchitis and various gastrointestinal disorders.

If an invader manages to break this barrier, our immune system is our next line of defense, but if our immune system isn’t working efficiently, it becomes unbalanced and can over respond to this invader by over producing certain types of antibodies, which can result in allergies.

So what can we do to help our immune system?

Antibioitcs.
Antibiotics for upper respiratory infections are an effective treatment for many people, but they come with some unwanted side effects like killing the good bacteria in your gut, that can lead to other problems such as leaky gut syndrome.

Dietary Supplements.
The natural remedies for upper respiratory infections are dietary supplements.

Dietary supplements can offer extraordinary results for people who deal with frequent upper respiratory infections.

Also with bacteria becoming more resistant to antibiotics, the ability to take supplements to the same effect offers a viable alternative. Because there are only minor possible side effects of this protocol, this is an effective, long-term natural option.

What supplements can help with frequent upper respiratory infections?

The supplements we recommend are Epicor, Mannan Oligosaccharides, and Bovine Immunoglobulins.

Epicor is a dietary supplement that keeps our immune system in balance. One of the main benefits of Epicor is for its mucosal benefits; this is what allows us to fight sinus infections, bronchitis, cold/flu symptoms, and allergies.

Mucosal benefits of Epicor

So how do we help our overwhelmed immune system? With Epicor.

Epicor helps get our immune system back in balance in the following ways:

  • Supports the mucosal barrier by increasing levels of secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) levels in your saliva. sIgA is a key antibody in your saliva and other mucus membranes. sIgA antibodies are in our eyes, mouth, nose and other mucus membranes throughout our bodies to help trap pathogens before they may cause harm.

  • Activates B cells to support antibody production and NK cell activity. NK cells are a type of white blood cell circulating in our blood and organs that are fast and effective in seeking out and destroying bad cells at the initial occurrence. NK cells are called “natural killer” because they don’t need help from other cells to differentiate “good” cells from “bad” cells. This makes them much quicker to respond to keep your body healthy.

  • Controls IgE production, an important factor in allergic response.

What is Epicor?

EpiCor is a dried fermentate made using baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Fermentate is the by-product of a unique, specialized fermentation process. When the yeast cells are deprived of oxygen, they produce immune supporting compounds and metabolites such as proteins, peptides, antioxidants, polyphenols, organic acids, and nucleotides.

The yeast that is used in Epicor will not contribute to yeast infections or yeast overgrowth. These are a product of Candida albicans.

Intestinal benefits of Epicor

The continual intake of EpiCor fermentate can positively affect the intestinal environment in humans by increasing butyrate levels in the colon and by stimulating Lactobacilli growth.

Benefit one: increasing butyrate levels

Butyrate, an end-product from carbohydrate fermentation by the gut microbiota:

  1. Is the main energy source for colonocytes (cells of the colon).
Butyrate is absorbed by colonocytes. Without this food for the colonocytes, they will undergo self-digestion and die.

  2. Possesses immunomodulatory activities.
Immunomodulation regulates and adjusts the immune system to reach a desired immune response based on therapeutic goals. This approach, which should allow the host to better defend itself against invading microorganisms during the course of infection, is attractive because (i) it allows for enhanced host-derived mechanisms to take part in the immune response and (ii) it does not involve the use of organism-specific therapeutics such as antibiotics.

Benefit two: lactobacilli growth
The Lactobacillus genus is recognized as containing several health-enhancing species:

  1. “Friendly” bacteria that normally live in our digestive, urinary, and genital systems.

  2. Help us break down food, absorb nutrients, and fight off “unfriendly” organisms that might cause diseases and infections.

Dosing, side effects, and contraindications:
Our recommended dosage is 1000mg a day
No potential side effects or drug interactions have been reported.

Relative contraindications include: pregnancy, lactation, allergy to baker’s yeast

Combine products for greater effect
At Institute for Specialized Medicine, to amplify the effectiveness of Epicor, we use a combination of EpiCor, Mannan Oligossaccarides and Bovine Immunoglobulins as a natural combination stimulating mucosal immunity.

Mannan Oligosaccharides
Mannan Oligosaccharides (MOS) is a prebiotic isolated from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Prebiotics are non-digestible carbohydrate-based food ingredients that stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria (bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria) in the gastrointestinal tract. Prebiotics act as food for probiotics. You need a healthy amount of probiotics in your intestines to help keep your digestive system in balance. If you don’t eat foods rich in prebiotics, your level of probiotics may fall.

The main benefit of MOS as it relates to immunity is that it is also an immune polysaccharide –a molecule possessing one of the strongest stimulatory effects on mucosal immune responses. This provides our bodies the ability to modulate the immune response in an appropriate way and can enhance the host’s immune response to certain infections.

Dosing, side effects, and contraindications:
The starting dose of MOS should be 500 mg 2 times a day. If this dose is tolerated, it can eventually escalate to 1-3000 mg 2 times a day.

MOS should not be consumed by those with a known allergy to baking or brewer’s yeasts

MOS should be taken 2-3 hours apart from supplements containing calcium, magnesium, iron and strontium

Relative contraindications include: pregnancy, lactation, allergy to baker’s yeast

Bovine Immunoglobulins
Another supplement that has been extensively studied in regards to stimulation of mucosal immunity is serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin isolate (SBI), which contains over 90% protein, more than 50% of which consists of immunoglobulins, mainly IgG.

Immunoglobulins are proteins present in our blood that function as antibodies to neutralize bacteria and pathogens. It multiplies and attacks foreign substances to keep infections away. There are five various immunoglobulin classes that differ in their response and function– IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM.

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is present in our bodies to help prevent infections—many dealing with our airway and lung function including sinus infections and respiratory infections. People with IgG deficiency are more likely to get infections.

Dosing, side effects, and contraindications:
The recommended dosage is 1500mg a day taken on an empty stomach.
Potential side effects: diarrhea and abdominal discomfort

Relative contraindications include: pregnancy, lactation

In summary, natural remedies for upper respiratory infections include the co-administration of EpiCor, MOS, and Bovine Immunoglobulins. This provides a significant support to our mucosal immune system and improves our ability to resist infection and chronic inflammatory ailments.
