Natural Remedies for Pain

Natural Remedies for Pain

If you are dealing with daily chronic pain, most likely you think there are no natural remedies for pain, that controlling it only comes from taking painkillers or toughing it out.

But did you know food supplements and herbs are natural remedies for pain?

It has been known for centuries that certain herbs and food supplements provide effective control for pain and inflammation. Furthermore, the number of food supplements and herbs available for pain control significantly exceeds the number of prescription painkillers.

While taking supplements and herbs for pain, you need to understand certain principals of natural therapy:

  • you have to purchase food supplements and herbs from a trusted supplier and look for the supplements with maximal concentration of known active ingredients
  • the pain killing effect of natural products is very dose-dependent, and the most common reason for lack of efficacy is based on an insufficient dosage
  • the painkilling effects of natural products reaches its efficacy much slower than that of the prescription painkillers; typically it takes at least 3-4 days before you may notice a difference
  • quite frequently, multiple pathways contribute to the origin of pain, it is likely you will have to use a synergistic combination of herbs and supplements targeting specific pathways

Gluten-Free Remedies offers a variety of supplements targeting pain. All of these supplements are high quality and several of them represent proprietary blends designed specifically by Dr. Shikhman to use in his clinical practice.

Our most popular supplements for pain include:

This product was designed by Dr. Shikhman and contains a combination of Devil’s claw root extract and Chuchuhuasi bark extract. It has a strength comparable to ibuprofen but with fewer side effects.
Devil’s claw, possesses analgesic, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. It inhibits various mediators of inflammation including COX-2, iNOS and suppresses translocation on nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kB). Chuchuhuasi has been used as a general remedy to relieve pain and inflammation, to treat arthritis, rheumatism and back pain. Chuchuhuasi contains a variety of naturally-occurring compounds, including the two tumor-fighting alkaloids mayteine and maytansine. The bark is rich in several alkaloids, tannins, triterpenes and sesquiterpenes. The pyridine alkaloids in the bark may be primarily responsible for its anti-arthritic effects.

Traditionally, iporuru is taken to control muscle pain and joint pain, headaches as well as toothaches. The anti-inflammatory properties of iporuru are attributed to a group of alkaloids. Basic research demonstrates the anti-inflammatory activity of iporuru relies on its ability to inhibit cyclooxigenase (COX) enzymes responsible for mediating of inflammation. In contrast to pharmacological drugs possessing COX inhibitory activity/ NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, diclophenac etc), iporuru does not cause but accelerates healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers.

Boswellia is an aromatic resin obtained from the Indian tree, Boswellia serrata, which has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to control pain and inflammation. The main biologically active ingredient of boswellia is boswellic acid. Current research showed that boswellic acid expresses strong anti-inflammatory activity and inhibits leukocyte migration, suppresses antibody production and inhibits activation of classical and alternative complement pathways. In addition, boswellic acid expresses analgesic activity, prevents degradation of cartilage matrix and reduces bronchospasm. Curcumin is an orange-yellow component of turmeric (Curcuma longa), a spice often found in curry powder. Curcumin possesses a variety of biologic and pharmacologic activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anticarcinogenic ones. Curcumin is a potent inhibitor of COX-2, lipooxygenase, ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), nuclear factor-kB, c-Jun N-terminal kinase and protein kinase C and has also been demonstrated to play a vital role against pathological conditions such as atherosclerosis and neurodegenerative diseases.

Butterbur has been used for centuries as a medicinal plant to treat headaches and neck pain. The main biologically active ingredient of butterbur is petasin. Petasin possesses anti-spasmodic properties that help to reduce spasms in blood vessels smooth muscles. It also inhibits synthesis of leukotrienes, potent pro-inflammatory agents causing bronchial spasms in those with asthma. The second active constituent, isopetasin, reduces inflammation via changes of prostaglandin metabolism.

Feverfew, is a member of the sunflower family that has been used for centuries as a medicinal plant to treat headaches, arthritis and fevers. The main biologically active ingredient of feverfew, parthenolide, possesses anti-spasmodic activity and helps relieve spasms in smooth muscle tissue. It also expresses anti-inflammatory activity, inhibits platelets aggregation, suppresses histamine release and inhibits cancer cell growth. The extracts from butterbur and feverfew express strong synergistic activities.

Normogesic is a proprietary combination of two aminoacids, D-phenylalanine and D-leucine, capable of blocking enkephalinase prolonging the life of enkephalins allowing for longer-lasting pain relief. Enkephalin is a pentapeptide that regulates pain perception in the body. Enkephalinase is an enzyme which degrades enkephalins. Experimental and limited clinical data showed that inhibition of enkephalinase amplifies the efficacy of painkillers and enhances the analgesic effect of acupuncture.

Pregnenolone is a steroid hormone which is synthesized in our body from cholesterol and serves as a precursor progestogens, mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens, as well as the neuroactive steroids. Although pregnenolone is considered a prohormone, it regulates activity of specific neurotransmitter-gated channels such as NMDA and GABA(A), and therefore controls glutamate-NO-cGMP pathway involved in pain mediation. Also, pregnenolone possesses anti-inflammatory activity and reduces inflammation in the skin and colon.

You can use each of the supplements alone or in combination.

Our popular combinations include:
Devils Claw Plus + RheumaNat + Normogesic: generalized pain, pain due to arthritis in hands, shoulders and knees, fibromyalgia, pain with insufficient response to pain killers

Devil’s Claw Plus+ Butterbur/Feverfew + Boswellia/Curcumin: generalized pain, neck and lower back pain

Normogesic + Pregnenolone: pain due to inflammation
